- The Sopwith Snipe was designed as the replacement for the Camel. The Snipe began production in 1918 with more than 4500 being produced. It offered better visibility compared to the Camel and also had a superior rate of climb. Powered by a single Bentley BR.2 rotary engine, it had a max speed of 121 mph compared with the Camel's 115 mph and an endurance of three hours. Its armament consisted of two forward 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine guns and was also able to be armed with up to four 25 lb (11 kg) bombs, the same as the Camel. The production of the Snipe ended in 1919, with just under 500 of the type being built.
