- Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located in a polder featuring abundant water, grass meadows and fertile farmland. In 2009 birds were involved in seven airplane engine problems at Schiphol airport. The capital’s city park the Amsterdamse Bos, the coast and sand dunes are also located nearby, as are the Westeinder and Vinkeveense lakes. All these factors make Schiphol an appealing location for birds. However, birds can pose a serious safety risk to aircraft. In order to optimise aviation safety as far as possible. Schiphol employs 16 bird controllers who patrol the runway area 24/7 in two or three-man teams, dispersing birds from the operative runways. The airport also plants special grass types, shrubs and trees on the airport site to ensure that bird numbers at the airport are kept to a minimum. These efforts help to prevent birds colliding with aircraft – bird strikes.
