- Eastern Air Lines welcomed the first aircraft in Eastern’s fleet, a Boeing 737-800 flown into Miami International Airport for the first time. Eastern has ordered twenty Boeing 737-800 aircraft. It will be the backbone of Eastern’s fleet of new fuel efficient WhisperLiners to take to the skies starting in the second quarter of 2015. The inaugural arrival received a water cannon salute, the aircraft was dedicated as “The Spirit of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker”, Eastern’s most famous CEO from 1930 to 1965. Speeches by Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Emilio T. Gonzalez, Edward Wegel, and others to welcome the aircraft and the re-launch of Eastern Air Lines in Miami took place.
